Global Radiology CME is honored to welcome Prof. Dr. med. Reto Sutter as faculty for Imaging in Switzerland 2027. Internationally recognized for his expertise in musculoskeletal imaging, Dr. Sutter is Chief of Radiology at Balgrist University Hospital and Professor of Musculoskeletal Radiology at the University of Zurich. He is regarded as one of Europe's leading authorities in advanced MRI and CT of the musculoskeletal system, with particular expertise in sports injuries, spine imaging, orthopedic and rheumatologic disorders, postoperative imaging, and image-guided musculoskeletal interventions.
After earning his medical degree from the University of Zurich, Dr. Sutter completed radiology and pathology training at University Hospital Zurich, Kantonsspital Winterthur, and The Royal London Hospital in the United Kingdom. Following a fellowship in musculoskeletal radiology at Balgrist University Hospital, he joined the faculty and rose through the academic ranks to become Chief of Radiology and a member of the hospital's executive leadership team. In 2021 he was appointed Professor of Musculoskeletal Radiology at the University of Zurich.
Dr. Sutter's clinical and research interests focus on advanced musculoskeletal MRI and CT, including 3T and ultra-high-field 7T MRI, photon-counting CT, imaging of cartilage, joints and the spine, femoroacetabular impingement, sports medicine, inflammatory arthropathies, and innovative techniques for reducing metal artifacts around orthopedic implants and joint replacements. He also leads research in image-guided spine and musculoskeletal pain therapies, helping translate emerging imaging technologies into everyday clinical practice.
An internationally respected educator, Dr. Sutter serves as medical lead for the Swiss Center for Musculoskeletal Imaging (SCMI) and was appointed Course Director for Musculoskeletal Radiology for the prestigious International Diagnostic Course Davos (IDKD). He serves on the scientific committees of both the European Congress of Radiology (ECR) and the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA), is an executive committee member of the International Skeletal Society, and reviews manuscripts for many of radiology's leading journals, including Radiology, Investigative Radiology, European Radiology, Skeletal Radiology, and the Journal of Magnetic Resonance Imaging.
Dr. Sutter has authored more than 300 peer-reviewed scientific publications and has received numerous international honors, including the President's Medal of the International Skeletal Society, recognizing his outstanding contributions to musculoskeletal radiology.
His lectures are known for combining practical, evidence-based teaching with the latest advances in musculoskeletal imaging, making him a sought-after speaker at major radiology meetings throughout Europe and around the world.
